The D16 Ships This Week!

It’s been a long journey for us here at Digital Bolex, and we thank you all for your continued support and patience as our project has developed and evolved.

Since our Kickstarter ended, we have made hundreds of changes to the camera based on feedback from our camera backers, accomplished cinematographers, and industry veterans, resulting in a far more polished and professional tool than we originally envisioned. We believe that an affordable camera that preserves the experience and aesthetic of shooting film fills an important position in the digital marketplace, and we could not have done it without your help and support.

We’re pleased to announce that the Digital Bolex D16 will begin shipping to backers starting this week. If you are a backer, we will contact you shortly to verify your shipping addresses and contact details, so please make sure that emails from will clear your spam filter.

For those of you who are not backers but are interested in purchasing a camera, we are also announcing our first official pre-sale for the next 500 cameras! This pre-sale will open on December 16th at 10am EST through our website with a retail price of $3,299 for a 256 GB camera, and $3,599 for the 512 GB camera. Stay tuned for the official pre-sale link which we’ll be announcing here later in the week.

You will need to be logged in as a member of the site in order to make a purchase, so if you plan to buy a camera, but do not already have a user account, please create an account here on our site before December 16th to ensure an easy checkout.

If you are not ready to purchase a camera, but still want to support our mission, our store will also have Digital Bolex branded accessories and apparel items. And all support is greatly appreciated.

Thank you all for your patience, and we can’t wait to get cameras into your hands!

Joe, Elle, and the entire Digital Bolex team

  3. A shipping update would be great. It’s been two months since you announced shipping. Any news? I’d expect to see some D16 footage in the wild by now.

  4. Hey guys,
Hope all is well… hows the shipping going with the kick starter cameras?
I think I bought near the end. Any rough idea when I may see my Digital Bolex.? Many thanks 🙂

  5. Hi,
I’m a Kickstarter backer, patiently, as much as I can, waiting to hear of when my camera will ship, but…
We’re putting on Geneva’s first Kino Kabaret, an independant film creation event ( ), with the support of two local rental companies and the Black Movie independant film festival. We are expecting over 100 participants to make some 20 short films over a one week period. It would be fantastic for us, for the participants, and for you, we think, to have a D16 available for the event. Where do I stand in line? Is there a chance we’ll get it in time, that’s in one week, 1st production meeting is on Sunday January 19th, with people starting to shoot on the 20th.
    Warm regards,

  6. You might look into using one of the forwarding services that let people overseas shop for items sold in the USA?

I do not endorse violating any agreements that Digital Bolex has with Paillard etc.

Congratulations on shipping, if Jihua had lisitened to me and let me help them they would have had their 3K Kodak CCD camera shipping three years ago, but its great that you can keep that sensor option now that Acam dII ™ is out of reach…

  7. I’m really sorry I missed the last two years, but I am happy that I am here now. I just decided to order a second camera after ordering my first yesterday. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU Joe And Elle. I look forward to meeting you guys some day. I’m a 48 year old new Film student, and a Chicago Fire Fighter. After telling the crew I put together from Columbia College in Chicago all I can say is there are 5 – 20 something kids that are shaking in their boots in excitement. We look forward to making movies. I also look forward to jumping up on the Fire Engine and getting a shot rolling down the street!!

  8. So awesome! Congrats everyone on the Digital Bolex team!

Dang, I wish I could have reserved a specific camera number. Would have loved Number 42 to go with my Production Studio name “Vortex42Studios”. Dunno if that’s asking for the Moon on a stick? 😉

  11. Faaaabulous! Considering the challenges you have all faced, really, it was not that long in the works, very impressive indeed.

I always had the feeling that you would pull it off.

Here is to your collective vision, perservance, and integrity!

    Well done!

  16. Can’t tell you guys how happy I’m for you!!! It’s been a long time coming and the film making community has been waiting for this awesome piece of gear!!!! Getting ready to put my order in after the new year! I wish you all the best! Good luck.

  17. I am so excited about the prospects of the Digital Bolex. I can’t wait to use it next year for a project that I know it will not only provide compelling images for, but also look totally badass in the behind the scenes shots!

  18. Great news and congratulations. You all worked so hard on this and I think the resulting camera will exceed all of your expectations.

Really looking forward to working with the D16.

  19. Congrats and huzzah! When are the last numbers expected to ship? I don’t imagine it’ll be before the 17th, but if it is I might have to rethink delaying delivery until after I return from a trip and kick in for next or 2nd day.

    Congrats to the whole team!
I’ll patiently wait for the next batch and will delight in seeing D16 footage coming up in the meantime. So happy to have been part of the journey, even modestly.

  21. is there any way to request a specific number? sounds silly i know, but i love me some power numbers (the one I’m interested in is towards the end of the 100 not the front)

i don’t care if it means waiting longer to get the camera.

  22. Joe-

I think it would be some awesome PR if you guys did something with the “unboxing” videos and “first shots” videos that the backers are all about to make. Like a montage or something. I know that you guys have gotten a lot of flack over not having the cameras out yet and I think it might be a really cool statement.

And also, congrats! This really is the start of a new era.

  23. Great news. I understand you are shipping in batches. How will you determine the shipping order?
If it is alphabetical I would like to advise that I am changing my surname to Aardvark

  24. Actually I think of getting package with battery, mount, viewfinder (when it will be available?) and all other stuff (cheeseplate?) separately and international. Will it be possible? What is your NorthAmerica deal about – only camera I hope?
