Women Cinematographers Grant: Rules & Regulations

If selected for the Grant, Grantee agrees to the following rules and regulations:


Grant is open only to productions that engage a female director of photography. Grant may only be applied towards projects outlined in the application. Grant will not be awarded to projects that perpetuate discrimination or contain hate speech. Grant is only open to films shooting in the Continental United States. Equipment may not be transported outside of the United States, or Grantee production may be subject to fines. Director, Producer(s), and Cinematographer (“Filmmakers”) must be over the age of 18 and crew must have legal authorization to work the United States. All non-intern crew on Grantee production must be paid at least a minimum-wage rate based on applicable state laws. Grantee productions must have a BTS photographer and videographer on hand to create BTS material. Filmmakers may not be changed without notification and written permission. Number of shooting days may not be changed or extended without written permission. You must become a member of the digitalbolex.com website to submit an application.

Applications will be evaluated by a committee of film professionals and sponsor representatives, and Grants will be awarded based on the strengths of Applicant’s project and Applicant’s scheduling needs. Applications must be made at least 6 weeks before commencement of production. Applicants will be notified of selection within 4-6 weeks of submission. Applicants are encouraged to apply with multiple films, however preference will be placed on Applicants who have not yet received a grant. Application is not a guarantee of selection.


Recipients will be required to provide additional documentation before equipment is loaned, including copies of location permits and production insurance certificate. All Grantee productions are required to have insurance that covers general liability, workers compensation, and an entertainment policy. The certificate must fully cover entire costs of ALL rentals for production. Certificate must name “Digital Bolex” as “Additional Insured” and “Loss Payee.” Production must be covered in the event that equipment is lost, stolen, or damaged. Certificate must cover unattended vehicle theft. Grantee productions featuring “risky or hazardous” content will be asked to provide documentation of a stunt coordinator, weapons handler, animal wrangler, or other trained support personnel. Recipients will have 14 days from date of notification of Grant award to return all necessary paperwork, or Grant may be revoked.


In exchange for access to the equipment in the Grant, Recipients give permission to all Sponsors to use Filmmakers’ names, characters, photographs, voices, videotape, and likenesses in connection with promotion in all media at their discretion without royalty or compensation, and agree to provide Sponsors: bios and photos of Filmmakers and cast (min resolution 3456X5184, min 240 DPI, hereafter “Print-Resolution”). At least 15 minutes of (minimum 1920×1080 resolution, 24 or 30fps, “HD Quality”) Behind the Scenes (“BTS”) HD Quality video and 100 Print-Resolution photos for a short film or music video (1-15 minutes) or 30 minutes of HD Quality BTW video and 250 Print Resolution photos for a long film (15 minutes+). BTS material must be made available to sponsors immediately after completion of shoot. Please do not include photos or video that may be considered spoilers, as images will be used at sponsor’s discretion and may appear separate from any publicity outreach scheduled by Recipient. Filmmakers agree to make themselves available to sponsors for recorded and text interviews and other requests. Recipients agree to include the line “Made with the help of the Digital Bolex Grant for Women Cinematographers” in the end credits of their film.


Recipients are required to provide security deposit in the amount of the insurance deductible. Equipment must be returned on schedule. Productions that return equipment late must pay penalty fees per day of $1000. After a week late equipment will be considered lost or stolen and must be paid for in full in addition to penalty fees. If Grant equipment is damaged, production is required to pay all repair and replacement costs. All security deposits will be returned by mail after all equipment has been returned and fully checked for function and cosmetic damage. Recipients must pay for shipping, shipping insurance, and $100 service fee on equipment if unable to pickup in Los Angeles. If all rules & regulations are not strictly adhered to, or if Recipient knowingly violates terms set forth in their signed rental agreement, Grantee production will be billed and liable for $1000/day in equipment rental costs, up to a maximum $12,500 penalty.


Recipients and Applicants waive any and all claims of liability against Digital Bolex (“Coordinator”), its employees and agents, the Grant’s Sponsors and their respective employees and agents, for any personal injury or loss which may occur from the conduct of Coordinator, or participation in, the Grant, or from the use of any equipment provided. In order to receive a Grant, participants must sign a waiver form provided by the Coordinator. Disruptive, annoying, harassing or threatening behavior by Applicants is strictly prohibited. Coordinator will interpret these rules and resolve any disputes, conflicting claims or ambiguities concerning the rules or the Grant and the Company’s decisions concerning any disputes shall be final. In the event of unforeseeable circumstances, certain pieces of equipment may not be available for each Grant production. Grant may be put on hold, indefinite hiatus, or cancelled without notice. Rules are subject to change without notification.
