Once upon a time, motion picture cameras that created high-quality images were affordable for all filmmakers on any budget. Consumer 8mm and 16mm cameras like the original Bolex shot footage that could be projected on any movie theater screen.

In today’s digital market, ‘affordable’ and ‘consumer’ have become synonymous with ‘low-quality’ — but it doesn’t have to be that way. Meet the D16, the first digital cinema camera to shoot RAW at a price anyone can afford.

The D16 combines legendary Bolex quality with the best in digital technology to bring you unrivaled image quality for its class. The D16 captures and preserves image detail with stunning accuracy that gives your footage an organic look, and the camera body is designed to fit comfortably in your hands–emulating the feel of a traditional 16mm film camera, while still offering all of the shooting positions and mounting options of a professional digital cinema camera.

The features of this camera include a Super 16mm sized CCD sensor with a global shutter and 12 stops of dynamic range. The D16 records in 12-bit CinemaDNG raw format to give you fully uncompressed footage with no artifacts. 24-bit 96 kHz sound delivers studio quality audio without need for external recording devices. The camera comes with an internal Enterprise Class SSD that acts both as a buffer and a backup for your footage, as well as a 4 hour battery. Dual CF card slots and USB 3.0 ensures your ability to download footage safely and quickly. Our interchangeable lens mount gives you the option of using traditional bolex and C-mount lenses, or the newer lenses you already own and love. The best camera on the market.

This camera is a power horse that provides an excellent image with total free range of possibilities as to how you massage the final image. I’ve been waiting to review this product as I’ve been waiting for more frame rates and resolutions. Even though those things are still currently unavailable (hopefully soon) this camera is well worth the money! Enough for me to make the decision of buying a second one.

5 Stars for a company that provides EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE, Quality and Reliability. For the price point, there’s really nothing that competes with this camera’s image.

Best sub $10k camera i’ve worked with (and more fun/as good as the 10k plus cams in many ways imho…). I find myself annoyed when i’m DP’ing a gig where i can’t use my D16. The more i work with it, and the more i grade the footage, the more impressed i become.

There is simply no camera like it in the world. There similar and relative cameras, but nothing has the beautiful replication of color and RAW imagery that is produced from this modular camera. What’s more is that Digital Bolex makes sure to respond to every customer, and it’s not just a company, it’s like an extended family you can trust.

There are a lot of ‘cinema cameras’ flooding the market these days, but all come with their drawbacks. For me personally, I hate the rolling shutter effect. While the D16 eliminates this problem with its global shutter, it has also manufactured a piece of equipment with a certain je ne c’est quoi… as soon as I picked the thing up, I felt like I was holding a camera that was made for me.

While the RAW format was (and still is) intimidating when you don’t have a lot of post/workflow knowledge, seeing the image that this affordable camera can produce will dilute concerns. This thing is fun to shoot on and simply put, it takes gorgeous pictures. I can’t wait to see the D16 evolve.

Extra points go to the wonderful staff at Digital Bolex. Their service has always been fast and friendly!

I think the most important about that camera is not that I, as a cinematographer, love to work with it, but that all the directors I work with prefer this camera.
As a photographer, I loved to work with raw images, and I always wanted this from my cinema camera. But with this camera I’m getting more than simple raw video files. Footage from this camera looks as maximum non-digital, as any digital camera in the world could ever provide.

I Love the super 16 aesthetic! And the 12 bit raw is an absolute dream to work with. The colours coming out of this camera are unmatched by any digital camera I’ve had the chance to work with. For the price, nothing else comes close.

Truly the best camera for the price. I’ve shot on DSLRs/Alexa/Vision 2/3 film, and out of all of those only this camera and the film had global shutter. Not to mention how my life changed with RAW. I had a lot of questions when I first got this camera, but the community was really helpful in answering all of those questions. Also the customer service has been great, and why I have to give a five star rating. A day before I shot a two day short film over a weekend, the SSD on the camera failed. It was a random error that came out of nowhere, and I was doomed for my shoot the next day. I emailed the bolex team, and Sylvia amazingly solved everything. She loaned me their office camera for the weekend while I sent them my camera to get fixed. I went from stressed and upset to relieved and thankful. With new cameras it’s sometimes worrisome what issues or problems they will have, but it’s clear that the Digital Bolex company knows how to overcome them. I must also say that this camera, because it shoots RAW is very manual and it’s harder to achieve a finished look than it would be with DSLRS. Thankfully, this finished look, looks professional and the camera’s features and menus are very intuitive and make it easy to figure out. You really don’t need a manual. Thank you Bolex!

The camera is fun and easy to shoot with. There’s something special about the look that when combined with vintage C-mount lenses that I just can’t seem to replicate with a BMPCC. Post-production has been a little challenging, for someone new to the RAW game (and a Windows user to boot). It can be challenging to get the color balance right in post, but with patience, I get great results. The D16 is not without its quirks, but overall it’s a great camera!
